Executive Summary

The project's primary objective as a short-term measure is to eliminate the emission of 18,962 tons of methane from the municipal landfill of Las Rosas in Maldonado. The project will build a methane recovery system upon the existing waste pile and six landfill cells and produce electricity to be sold to the national grid owned by UTE. The Project supports investments in civil works and equipment (gas capture, 0.8 MW generation plant, monitoring) and technical assistance (engineering planning, project management, training, dissemination, and evaluation).

The installation of the plant is foreseen to be completed by the end of 2004.
