Síntese

The Bisasar Road landfill site is situated 7 kilometers (km) from the Durban CBD (Central Business District). A methane generation) model predicts a peak generation of 7 200 m3/hr in 2011. The gas utilization plant is assumed to require 700 m3/hr at around 50% methane to produce one megawatt (1 MW).

The Mariannhill landfill site is located in the western area of the Durban Unicity approximately 20 km to the west of Durban in the Metro area. it is predicted that 1 775 m3/hr will be produced by 2024. Gas utilization equipment of a capacity up to 1.5 MW will be provided.

The La Mercy site is located approximately 35 km north of Durban. Gas production at La Mercy is calculated to peak at 770 m3/hr when the site is closed in 2006. The calculations included a 0.5 MW engine from 2004 to 2013.

The Durban municipal landfill sites at Mariannhill and Bisasar Road are based on a modern cellular sanitary landfill approach with methane recovery already built into the newest cells, and flaring systems installed to dispose of a portion of the methane being generated in an environmentally acceptable manner. The La Mercy landfill is an old rehabilitated landfill soon to be closed, and is equipped with only passive venting.
