Executive Summary

In the present case study for Poland, four landfill gas (LFG) plants are included, i.e: Torun, Szadolki landfill in Gdansk, Barycz in Krakow and Legajny in Olsztyn. The latter two are currently producing energy at the LFG plants.

The size of the landfills included in this case study range from 1.4 – 3.3 million tons, which can be classified as middle size landfills in Poland. The landfill in Torun is 40 years old, in 1991 approximately 650,000 tons were disposed of at the landfill, and since then another 850,000 tons have been disposed of. The other landfills are approximately 25 years old . As a general trend, waste amount generated has increased very rapidly over the last 10 years .
